Stratford Courier July 17, 1919 George Hanley Harmon was born on a farm west of Stratford, now known as the Fred Iles place, on November 2, 1883 and met death by drowning in the Des Moines River, July 7, 1919, being 35 years, 8 months and 5 days old. He leaves to mourn his early death his wife, his father, A.P. Harmon, one sister, Mrs. F.D. Hamilton of Webster City and one brother, Russell Harmon of West Bend. Many, many friends and acquaintances also mourn the passing of a true and devoted man. He was preceded in death by his mother, who passed away five years ago, two brothers and one sister who died in infancy. For several years George was a fireman for the Northwestern Railroad. After he closed his services with them he came to Stratford and has occupied various positions of trust in the business houses here. During the last few years he was in poor health and unable to stand any hard work. His always pleasant "Good Morning" or "Good Day" were always happy ones and he was always jolly and good natured enjoying a good laugh with his friends in a way that made you like him. He will be missed on our streets at at our social gatherings for he was popular with everyone who knew him. The silver cord is loosed, the golden bowl is broken, the dust has returned to the earth it was; a home stricken and many friends sorrowful. He is gone but the memory of him will live. Funeral services were held Thursday from the home in charge of Rev. H.I. Pharo and the remains laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.
